The State of New York prohibits any insurer from discriminating against anyone on the sole basis that they have been a victim of domestic violence. This includes:
- Refusing to issue, renew, deny, or cancel an insurance policy
- Demanding higher insurance premiums or increasing premiums
- Using status as a victim of domestic violence as an underwriting criterion
- Discriminating in the fees or commissions of agents for writing or renewing a policy for victims of domestic violence
Furthermore, for any individual who lives in New York and delivers a protective order to us that is against the policyholder, we are required to keep certain information confidential such as the address and telephone number of the insured for the duration of the protective order. This right extends to a child’s parent or guardian if the covered person is the child.
