QUENTIN ALLUMS: My name is Quentin Allums, I also go by Q, I also go by Just Q, I’m the CEO of Urban Misfit Adventures. Essentially what we do is tell stories for a living. Then I also travel the world. I speak. I have a dog that I’m absolutely obsessed with. I love video games, I love eSports, things like that — but today I really want to talk about burnout.
QUENTIN ALLUMS: So, in 2018 I remember I was at BitCon, which is the world’s largest video conference. And I was speaking out there and I met a guy by the name of Willie Morris. He sat me down and he was like, Q — you’ve got a lot going on. You’re building a business — there’s a lot that goes into that. What I need you to remember is identify the things that fill up your cup before you need those things.

QUENTIN ALLUMS: So, for me, that was video games, that was running, that was working out, reading, things like that, but they were going to make me feel better. So taking care of myself before I actually needed to take care of myself. So, for you, I would say identify those things are going to help you fill up your cup before you actually need to be taking care of yourself.
On screen: #2 KEEP YOUR HEALTH TOP OF MIND
QUENTIN ALLUMS: So, second thing I would say is keep your health top of mind. I was a collegiate athlete and when I started my first business, I just forgot about taking care of myself. So I’d say some of the things that have specifically helped me is making sure I am eating right, making sure I am working out — I’m moving my body — in whatever way works for you.
QUENTIN ALLUMS: You know that could be a walk during lunchtime, that could be a run at night. And lastly, I would say meditation has helped me tremendously. So just make sure that you are keeping your health top of mind.
On screen: #3 IDENTIFY PEOPLE THAT KEEP YOUR CUP FILLED UP
QUENTIN ALLUMS: And lastly, I would say identify people that are going to help keep your cup filled. So I would say most people — especially entrepreneurs — the surround themselves with people that they love. I would say something that a lot of people can benefit from is also surrounding themselves with people that love them. That’s just a common theme that I see across all entrepreneurs. It’s very lonely, it often feels like you’re building this thing alone.
QUENTIN ALLUMS: Even if you do have a team, even if you do have employees. So, I would say make a list of people that you’re like hey, if something goes wrong, if I’m not feeling it — or if I feel burned out — I can go to those people and they’re going to be there for me.
